i dont fully understand the idea of 'gritty retellings' or 'realistic retellings' of fairy tales that rely heavily on shock value and explicitly include 'dark material' (for example red riding hood often gets retold with more obvious depictions of csa) not because of like a ruined childhood sense or anything but more because i always fold my hands and think Yeah What Did You Think The Original Story Was About
and to add this on to be clear: i DO like retellings or explorations of stories that expand upon or dissect the original moral of long standing folktales However. sometimes people do this in a way that feels like someone opening a grilled cheese sandwich and saying YOOOOO DID YOU KNOW THERE WAS CHEESE IN THIS?
